La Chaux-de-Fonds, a beautiful town in the canton of Neuchâtel, is located in the Jura Mountains, 10 km from the French border. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its “watchmaking urbanism”, which reflects the particular needs of a mono-industrial activity, mixing housing and workshops. Completely destroyed by fire in 1794, the town was rebuilt according to a checkerboard plan which is still an original feature of Swiss towns. Its particular urban planning and its mainly industrial activity earned it the nickname of “factory town”.
